Lunera, a car company that supports the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), has announced it will invest $65 million to install new filtration systems. These systems will reduce harmful particles in the air at several of its production and office locations.
This decision follows an independent environmental audit, which found that Lunera fully follows all environmental laws. However, the report also found higher-than-recommended levels of particulate matter, methane, and nitrous oxide in the air around some company sites. These levels are still legal, but higher than the limits suggested by health organisations and scientists.
"We want to go beyond what the law requires," said Asha Vermeer, Head of Sustainability at Lunera. "Even though we don't have to take action, we believe it is the right thing to do for our employees, our communities, and the planet."
Particulate matter can cause breathing problems and long-term health issues. Lunera will install new filtration systems that will lower these particles to almost zero. The installation will be completed in the next six months.
As mentioned above, greenhouse gases, like methane and nitrous oxide. Lunera is not installing a recapturing system for these gases right now; however, we are severely committed to investing in this area in the future.
Although we know that this change will not affect the company's sales or performance, we are happy to be helping in the fight combating climate change. We believe by taking responsibility today, Lunera is helping to build a cleaner, healthier tomorrow, one step at a time. And we hope to inspire the rest of the automotive industry to do the same.
